Albanian-born midfielder Granit Xhaka is a key figure in the Swiss national team. The Swiss will face Sweden on November 15 and Kosovo three days later in Group B qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
During training with the national team, Xhaka was briefly asked by a local journalist, as the topic had to do with the languages that the 33-year-old speaks:
“ I only speak Swiss German and that is enough .” Although it may seem almost unbelievable, Granit Xhaka openly denies speaking Albanian with this statement.
In the 2018 World Cup, the Serbia-Switzerland match in the group stage ended in a 1-1 draw. Xhaka and Shaqiri celebrated the winning goal with the Albanians' identifying symbol, the eagle. This "scene" was "read" that they had not forgotten their "roots".

Granit Xhka e ka tregu veten kush eshte. A ju kujtohet ..., Mos u perpiqni me i ul vlerat, e ka tregu veten. Nuk e njoh fare , por i uroj me te mirat qe deshiron per veten e vet. Lum ajo nane qe e ka.
Lereni patriotizmin sportiv. Sa primitiv qe jemi.!!! Patriotizmin kerkojani Sales, Rames, Kurtit. Atyre po. Ata duhen te jene patriot, ta duan atdheun e ta zhvillojne ate. Se a e beri shqiponjrn me duar, a flet shqip, kjo nuk çon askund. Edhe diçka. Nuk kendohen kenge patriotike neper stadiume. Shkoni , shikoni futboll, shijojeni , ndonje thirrje per ti mbeshtetur lojtaret, pa e tepruar dhe kaq.
