Dick Advokat has made a surprise return to international football, taking charge of the Curacao national team again on the eve of the 2026 World Cup. The Dutch coach will return to the bench at the age of 78, making him the oldest coach to lead a national team in world football's most important competition.
The decision comes just a month before the start of the tournament, after the sudden departure of Fred Rutten from the team's management was previously confirmed. Sports media reports that Rutten was not pressured to leave, making the change to the bench even more unexpected.
The lawyer retired from football about four months ago for family reasons, after deciding to devote himself to caring for his sick daughter. However, he has agreed to return to once again lead the team with which he had achieved historic results.
Curaçao is considered one of the smallest countries to have secured participation in the World Cup, while Advokat's return adds even more attention to the history of this representative team in the international arena.
