Concerns are growing about the structural stability of Mexico City's legendary Azteca stadium, which is set to host the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on June 11. Scientists and NASA officials are closely monitoring the gradual ground movements in the area where the sports facility is located.

According to Spanish sports newspaper Marca , NASA is monitoring the situation through advanced radar satellites, including the NISAR mission. These satellites are capable of identifying even the smallest movements of the earth's surface, helping researchers to identify in real time terrain deformations and areas where infrastructure could face increased pressure.

This project is part of a broader collaboration between NASA and international partners, aiming to monitor urban subsidence and assess the risk to infrastructure in large cities.

Meanwhile, reports from the field speak of increasingly visible damage to the stadium. According to some accounts, pieces of cement have been torn off the structure of the facility, while various fans have taken them as souvenirs from the historic stadium.

Experts attribute the phenomenon primarily to the intensive and long-term extraction of groundwater in Mexico City. The depletion of aquifers is occurring faster than the natural process of recharge, causing the soil to gradually compact under the weight of dense urbanization.

NASA scientist Marin Govorcin has stated that this imbalance between water extraction and the natural replenishment of underground reserves is the main cause of the land's continued subsidence.

The phenomenon of subsidence is not unknown in the world, but experts emphasize that its pace and scale in Mexico City are considered among the most extreme globally.
