Lamine Yamal is unstoppable on his way to becoming a star. His goal against Monaco was not enough to avoid defeat for Barcelona, but it did help him become the second-youngest goalscorer in Champions League history, behind teammate Ansu Fati.
On April 29, 2023, when he was only 15 years, 9 months and 16 days old, he made his debut for Barça in a match against Betis. But before he made his debut, Lamine Yamal had already impressed the coaching staff and his teammates.
Jordi Cruyff, then the club's director of football, recalled the moment when the rising star was discovered by Xavi Alonso.
"The first time he went to training, after 5 minutes the coach at the time, Xavi, looked at us and said that this is special . "Xavi wanted to make his debut a little earlier, but we thought 'he is not under contract, so first we will make sure that he will be ours for many years,'" says Cruyff.
The club still had not tied him to a contract that could protect him from the interests of other teams and they wanted to 'hide' him to avoid temptations and his "stealing" from sports clubs.
"I remember his veteran teammates, when he touched the first ball, they all said that he is different, very difficult to find," continued Jordi Cruyff.
Despite the quality and confidence that Lamine Yamal has shown in the elite, at the age of 17, the former Barcelona director of football wants a little break with him.
"He is a star, but we are always a little bit afraid, he is very young, we have to give him time because sometimes he will have better moments and worse, sometimes he will make a wrong decision. It's not good for anyone to classify him as the best at this moment, but it should be seen calmly, with his feet on the ground, that he continues to work, because he is a player of extraordinary talent", said Jordi Cruyff./Panorama
