In a harsh statement following the dramatic events that took place in the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly condemned the behavior of some Senegalese "fans" and players, who temporarily left the pitch in protest over a controversial penalty, which was later missed by Brahim Diaz in the 98th minute.
Infantino stressed that scenes of violence and such protests are unacceptable in sport. " Unfortunately, we saw unacceptable scenes on the pitch and in the stands: we strongly condemn the behaviour of some 'fans', as well as of some Senegalese players and members of the coaching staff. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this way and violence cannot be tolerated in our sport ," Infantino said.
The FIFA President continued to stress the importance of respecting the rules of football, saying: " We must always respect the decisions made by referees on and off the pitch. Teams must compete on the pitch and within the rules of the game, because any behaviour contrary to these rules endangers the very essence of football ."
He also stressed that it is the responsibility of teams and players to act responsibly and provide a good example to fans in stadiums and to the millions of spectators who follow football around the world.
Infantino concluded by saying that such events should not be repeated and that they have no place in football: " The ugly scenes we saw today must be condemned and must never be repeated. I repeat that they have no place in football ."
This stance by FIFA comes after a match that caused great tensions, where not only football, but also the behavior of players and fans became a topic of global discussion.
