Former Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert has reacted again to Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior, coming to the defense of Benfica player Gianluca Prestiani, who was accused by the Brazilian of racism.
According to a report by the Spanish newspaper "Marca", Shilavert made a series of controversial statements during an interview with Radio Rivadavia, where in addition to supporting Prestian, he also used harsh language and comments considered offensive to the LGBTQ+ community.
The incident in Madrid
The incident that sparked the backlash came after Real Madrid's 1-0 Champions League win over Benfica. After the match, Vinicius claimed that Presti had insulted him by calling him a "monkey", an accusation with clear racist connotations.
It has not yet been announced whether UEFA has launched an official investigation into the case, and there has been no final decision on any disciplinary measures.
Shilavert's statements
In his interview, 60-year-old Shilavert stated that he stands in solidarity with Prestian, claiming that the conflict was started by Vinicius.
" I sympathize with Prestian because Vinicius is the first to insult everyone. If you watch the video, he was the first to call him 'idiot '," the former goalkeeper is quoted as saying.
Shilavert also rejected any possibility of sanctions against the Benfica player, arguing that a punishment would set a precedent. In the same interview, he made other statements about football and developments in the sport, which have been described as homophobic by various international media.
This is not the first time that Shilavert has publicly criticized Vinicius. He previously used abusive language towards the Brazilian forward in 2024.
Accusations of "reverse discrimination"
During the interview, Shilavert accused Vinicius of, according to him, "discrimination against white people", referring to a previous statement by the footballer after a match between Brazil and Spain, where he had spoken about his experiences with racism.
The former goalkeeper also claimed that racist incidents in football occur mainly in Europe, a statement that remains his personal opinion and is not accompanied by official data in this context.
Comments also towards Mbappe
Shilavert also mentioned French striker Kylian Mbappe, who had defended Vinicius after the match and claimed that Prestian had insulted him several times with a racist term. In his reaction, Shilavert made comments about Mbappe's personal life, which have been deemed inappropriate by various media outlets.
Mbappe has not publicly reacted to these statements.
