The Netherlands confirmed their status as favourites in Group F of the 2026 World Cup, beating Tunisia 3-1 to finish top of the group with 7 points. This position avoids the Dutch from an early clash with Brazil in the knockout stage.
In the other group match, Japan and Sweden drew 1-1, a result that served both teams well. Japan came in second with 5 points and secured direct qualification, while Sweden, with 4 points, advanced as one of the best third-place teams.
The Netherlands decided the fate of the match from the start
In Kansas City, the Netherlands took the lead in the opening minutes. First, Ellyes Skhiri scored an own goal in the 3rd minute, while Brian Brobbey doubled the lead four minutes later.
Tunisia, already eliminated after losses to Sweden and Japan, narrowed the gap in the 54th minute through Hamza Mastouri. However, the Netherlands responded quickly and Jan Paul van Hecke sealed the 3-1 victory in the 62nd minute, following a corner kick from Tijjani Reijnders.
Ronald Koeman's team managed the rest of the match without difficulty and finished the group in first place. Tunisia finished last with no points and 13 goals conceded.
In the round of 32, the Netherlands will face Morocco, while Japan will play Brazil.
Draw that qualified Japan and Sweden
In Dallas, Japan and Sweden shared the points in a match that only became interesting after the break.
Japan took the lead in the 56th minute through Daizen Maeda, who finished off an assist from Junya Ueda. Sweden responded quickly and equalized in the 62nd minute with a powerful shot from Anthony Elanga.
In the 65th minute, Alexander Isak missed a good chance for the Swedes, while in extra time Japanese goalkeeper Suzuki made two crucial saves, first stopping Elanga and then Isak's header, which also ended up on the crossbar.
With this result, Japan finished the group in second place and will face Brazil in the next round, while Sweden secured passage to the knockout stage as one of the best third-place teams.
