Czech Republic striker Patrik Šik

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick has announced his retirement from the Czech Republic national team, just a day after the team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup in the group stage. Schick made the decision public in a post on social media, emphasizing that it was not made in a hurry.

" This decision is not impulsive and was not made overnight. It is an opinion I have had for a long time and have carefully analyzed ," the 30-year-old wrote on Instagram.

He ended his international career with 56 appearances and 26 goals for the Czech Republic. One of the highlights of his career was EURO 2020, where he was named the tournament's top scorer alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, with five goals each, and also won the award for the most beautiful goal thanks to his spectacular long-range strike against Scotland.

At the 2026 World Cup, the striker failed to find the net in three group stage matches. In the final match, he came on as a second-half substitute as the Czech Republic finished bottom of Group A with just one point.

" I am leaving proud of everything I have achieved with the national team jersey ," said Šik, adding that he believes that Czech football has the potential to achieve greater successes in the future.
