It's not always the winners who remain the longest in the fans' memories. The history of the World Cup is full of extraordinary teams that, despite spectacular football and golden generations of players, failed to win football's most prestigious trophy. However, their legacy continues to be considered among the greatest the sport has ever seen.

5. Portugal – 1966 World Cup

Portugal in 1966 was one of the biggest surprises in world football. With a generation led by the legend Eusebio and the foundation of the famous Benfica team, the Portuguese put on an incredible tournament.

In that World Cup, Portugal scored 17 goals, more than any other team, with Eusebio being the top scorer with nine. After victories over Brazil and North Korea, where they overcame a 0–3 deficit to 5–3, Portugal were only stopped in the semi-finals by England, who went on to win the title.

Eusebio always described the defeat to the English as the biggest disappointment of his career.

4. Austria – 1934 World Cup

Austria in the 1930s revolutionized football with the so-called "Wunderteam" or "Miracle Team." Led by the visionary Hugo Meisl, it brought a style of play based on ball circulation, constant movement, and technical superiority.

The team was led by Matias Sindelar, one of the most talented footballers of the time. After a 14-match unbeaten run, Austria went into the 1934 World Cup as favorites, but were eliminated by Italy in the semi-finals, in a match that remained controversial due to refereeing.

A few years later, after the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, the "Wunderteam" disbanded, and Sindelar died under circumstances that remain unclear to this day.

3. Brazil – 1982 World Cup

Although it did not win the World Cup, Brazil led by Tele Santana is considered one of the most spectacular teams in football history.

With names like Zico, Socrates, Falcao and Cerezo, the Brazilians wowed the world with their "Joga Bonito" philosophy, combining scoring with artistic football. They won all their matches in the first phase and then even defeated defending champions Argentina.

However, in the decisive match against Italy, where a draw was enough, Brazil was eliminated after one of the most famous matches in World Cup history. Despite the failure, the team was welcomed as heroes at home.

2. Netherlands – 1974 World Cup

The Netherlands of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels forever changed the way football was played. The concept of "Total Football" became a symbol of the tactical revolution of the 1970s.

In Germany, the Dutch dominated their opponents, defeating Argentina, Brazil and East Germany, while Cruyff was the central figure of the tournament.

However, in the final against West Germany, the Netherlands failed to maintain their initial lead and were defeated 2-1. Four years later, they also lost the 1978 World Cup final, remaining one of the greatest national teams without a world title.

1. Hungary – 1954 World Cup

At the top of this list is the legendary Hungary of the 1950s, a team that many historians still consider to be the best to never win the World Cup.

Led by Ferenc Puskas, Sandor Kocsis and Zoltan Czibor, the "Golden Team" dominated international football for four years, not losing a single official match between 1950 and 1954.

At the World Cup in Switzerland, Hungary scored a whopping 27 goals, eliminated Brazil and Uruguay and went into the final as absolute favorites. However, despite building a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes, they were defeated 3-2 by West Germany in what history knows as the "Miracle of Bern".

This defeat marked the beginning of the end for one of the greatest teams of all time. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, many of the team's stars never returned to their homeland, and the golden generation was broken up forever.

Although they did not win the most important trophy in football, these five national teams remain symbols of spectacular football and generations that changed the history of the game. Their legacy continues to inspire fans and footballers around the world.
