Renowned Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul has decided to retire from football. Through a message on social media, he announced that the time had come to hang up his gloves, after ending his highly successful career as a goalkeeper with clubs and the national team.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who made his name in England with Newcastle and Norwich, playing over 300 games with these teams, will certainly be remembered for one of the most epic moments in World Cup history.
It was the quarter-finals of the 2014 edition, when Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal brought on the goalkeeper in the 120th minute instead of starter Cillessen, as the teams were heading to penalties. This was the first time in history that a goalkeeper had been substituted before penalties and it came as a big surprise to everyone.
But Krul performed a miracle by saving two Costa Rican penalties, helping the Netherlands reach the semi-finals of the tournament, although, as he later admitted, it had simply been a psychological trick for the opponents, as he did not consider himself an expert in saving penalties.
