Iran has confirmed that it will not be taking part in the World Cup. Iranian authorities link this decision to the ongoing tensions with the United States and the conflict situation that, according to them, has hit the country in recent months.
In a statement on television, Minister Ahmad Donjamali said that the Iranian government does not consider participation in this international tournament possible under the current political and military conditions. He linked this position to the strong clashes with Washington and the assassination of their leader, for which he blamed the American authorities.
According to the minister, the situation in the country remains tense due to recent developments. He noted that Iran has been involved in two wars within a period of eight or nine months. These clashes, he said, have caused serious consequences for the civilian population.
Donjamali also stated that thousands of Iranian citizens have lost their lives during these conflicts. In this context, he argued that the country does not have the conditions to participate in an international sporting event like the World Cup.
President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.
However, Ahmad Doyanmali, Iran's Sports Minister, insisted in an interview with 'DPA' on the decision not to participate in the World Cup:
"Since this corrupt government has killed our leader, there are no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup. If the host country were different, the international community would certainly have reacted and withdrawn the hosting rights," the Iranian Sports Minister is also said to have suggested.
