Jose Mourinho has been linked with a move as manager of Benfica in Portugal.
Benfica's 3-2 defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday also led to the dismissal of coach Bruno Lage by the Portuguese side. After 55 games in charge, the Portuguese leaders could not get over the defeat to Qarabag and took this step.
Now it's Jose Mourinho, whose name is linked to a return to Benfica, the club where the 62-year-old first began his coaching career in 2000 and led the team in 10 games.
Club president Rui Costa said they aim to have a new manager in place by Saturday, but did not back down on speculation Mourinho is their preferred candidate. BBC Sport has learned Mourinho is open to returning to work in Portugal.
Mourinho was sacked by Fenerbahce on August 29, two days after the Turkish club were eliminated from the Champions League play-offs, ironically by Benfica.
"The profile of a Benfica coach must be that of a winner," Costa said. Mourinho seems ready.
