The Supercup between Gallatasaray and Fenerbahçe will not be played in Riyadh, as the Saudi Arabia-Turkey dispute failed to be resolved.
The Turks had planned to combine the race with events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of their modern state. Banners with messages about peace, messages about prominent Turks over the years, Kemal Ataturk t-shirts and the national anthem were some of the things Turks would do at King Sound.
The Saudis banned most of them, especially Kemal Ataturk's face from being displayed in the Riyadh stadium. So from noon, negotiations began in the Turkish Football Federation, with factors from Turkish clubs.
Although the Turkish Federation initially came out with a statement, informing that the match will take place normally and with the planned events, it was soon realized that things were not so.
An hour before kick-off (it was scheduled for 18:45) the delegations of the teams had not left the hotel where they were staying, stating that if they were not allowed to wear the T-shirts with their national hero, they would not go to the stadium .
The Saudis stationed police officers in the dressing rooms to prevent players from both teams from wearing Kemal Ataturk T-shirts if they took to the pitch. Turkish fans have claimed they were kicked out of the stadium by police after wearing shirts with "forbidden" messages.
Finally, a few minutes before the start of the match, Turkish media reported that the players of both teams were informed that the match had been postponed. Gallatasaraj staff who had gone to the stadium and were waiting for the players, packed their things and left immediately.
Some media even reported that after this fiasco, the president of the Turkish Football Federation, Mehmet Bujukeksi, has resigned.
At the same time, clubs, footballers, journalists and even ordinary Turkish fans flooded social media with images of Kemal Ataturk and deified the stance of Gallatasaray and Fenerbahçe, who refused to play without their distinctive kits.
