After the match-fixing scandal that rocked basketball in Kosovo, arrests have already begun. Kosovar media reports that the Directorate of Economic Crimes of the Kosovo Police carried out an action yesterday, arresting referee Daut Mehmeti and coach Arbnor Rifati in Prizren.
After the scandal, Judge Mehmeti was expelled for life from FIBA and the Federation of Kosovo. The Kosovo Police is expected to provide more detailed information about these two arrests, while the pair are in custody. The search warrant was developed with the aim of securing additional evidence and arresting two suspects in connection with the criminal offense of 'fixing the match or sport', while the activity of the Unique League, a joint event between Albania and Kosovo, is cited.
" The first suspect (referee with an international license) is suspected of fixing basketball matches in the framework of the Kosovo Super League, the Unique National League and the Balkan League, he carried out the actions in cooperation with the second suspect (basketball coach) . The suspects have carried out these actions for the purpose of material gain. Also, the first suspect has also cooperated with referees and international coaches in arranging basketball games, with the aim of winning bets ", the police announcement states. Suspects, after being interrogated by order of the Prosecutor of the Basic Prosecution in Pristina, were informed of the detention measure of 48 hours.
