Significant changes are expected to affect the Spanish football championship starting from the next seasons. La Liga president Javier Tebas has announced that a plan has been prepared to implement a new technology that aims to facilitate the work of referees and increase the accuracy of decision-making during matches.
According to him, it involves placing a chip inside the game ball, which will help accurately determine the moment when a football player hits the ball and, in combination with other technological systems, will help identify the offside position.
The leaders of the Spanish federation consider this an important step in increasing the role of technology in football, following the use of the VAR system and then the semi-automatic offside system.
More details about the project were provided by Tebas himself, who emphasized that the goal is for the system to be ready for next season, while full and permanent implementation is expected for the 2026–2027 season.
" We are bringing something new and we are implementing it. We will see if it will be ready for next season. So far we have a semi-automatic system that identifies the offside position, but personally it has not completely convinced me. To make this process easier, the idea of placing a chip inside the ball has also been approved by FIFA ," Tebas said.
For this system to fully function, the stadiums will also need to install a network of advanced cameras, which will work in combination with new technology to accurately determine controversial situations during matches.
