Shocking evidence from the Italian underworld has brought back to light Italy's dark period during the 1980s and 1990s. According to a report by Corriere dello Sport, former Italian mafia member Giampaolo Manca has revealed that AC Milan legend Marco van Basten was the target of a kidnapping plot.
Manca said the idea was orchestrated by notorious Italian criminal Renato Valanzasca, who told him the plan while they were both in prison. According to him, the criminal group had been following the former Dutch striker for months, with the aim of kidnapping him and then demanding a large sum of money as a ransom.
The evidence claims that the operation had entered an advanced stage of organization and preparations had been ongoing for a long period. However, the plan was never put into action.
According to Manca, the reason for the cancellation was unusual. Valanzasca, known as an ardent Milan fan, did not want such an action to harm the red and black club and give an advantage to Inter's rivals.
The story has sparked numerous reactions in Italy, reviving discussions about the influence of criminal groups in that period, when well-known figures in sports and public life were often considered potential targets of criminal organizations.
