Xhevahir Sukaj sees the derby as a match that now evokes less emotion than a few years ago, which is why stadiums have started to empty in such matches. In an interview for "Sport News" on "News 24", he explained that this comes from the decline in the quality of the game, but also from the grit and desire that are no longer the same as a few years ago.
In a conversation with moderator Trevisa Tufa, Sukaj analyzed Sunday's match, where he sees his former team as the favorite. He sees Partizan among the favorites for the championship title, even though they have lost important names in the transfer market, but he still hopes that in the end it will be Vllaznia that will secure the trophy.
Sukaj, has the magic of the derby faded somehow, as if it no longer has the impact it once had, even in your time. Why? It's thanks to the formula, the feel of the jersey... Or to put the question differently, what feeling does the derby give you today?
The derby has always been beautiful, especially when both teams were fighting for the title. However, now it doesn't give me the same satisfaction as before, maybe because of the quality. When I played, there was more grit, more desire. Today, more business has been done. As was the case with Partizan, who sold 4 players in this January transfer window. Maybe the atmosphere in the former "Qemal Stafa" stadium had more of an impact back then.
Are you going to the stadium? Does it seem normal to you that such a big challenge would take place in such a small stadium, in the "Arena e Demave"?
For a derby it is a bit small I think, but it is better to have a few fans and the stadium to be full, than a big stadium, but with 6000 people. On Sunday I believe that the “Arena e Demave” will be full, like never before. I see the stadium part with positivity. Partizan will be at an advantage playing the derby in this facility.
On paper it looks like a match without much history, with Partizan trailing by 17 points. Is this difference really that big? How do you see this derby, Sukaj?
Partizan is on the right track, because with the new formula, the two games in the end will bring out the champion. 17 points difference is a lot between them. I feel sorry for Tirana. I believe that this difference does not affect the derby. The derby never reduces the difference with points. Tirana will have “life and death” in this derby. Partizan, in the meantime, allows itself, why not, a false step.
Does this Partizan convince you, can this team win the title?
I think Partizan has weakened, but looking at the differences in the Albanian championship I don't think it will have much of an impact. Partizan will be in the top 4 and will fight in the final. I see it as a contender along with Egnatia and Vllaznia.
I'm not asking you like I used to, who decides the derby, as I'm sure you don't know a good portion of the players. But since you're known for your predictions, how is this derby going to turn out?
I have always supported Partizan and I hope that they win this time too, because I think they are the favorites. My prediction is that Partizan will win 1-0 with a goal from Preka. I see this player as very prepared, I don't know him personally, but he has left a very good impression on me every time I have followed him. I think he will be the main player of the match.
Finally, I want to close with a comment about Vllaznia. The question that every Shkodër fan asks is, could this be the right year? Can this team break the curse and bring the title to Shkodër?
Vllaznia is an emblematic team. The fans are in harmony regardless of the results, I noticed it recently while watching the match between Vllaznia and Egnatia. I would really like Vllaznia to win. They are missing a championship title. I think they have the best attack. Balaj is good, Dodaj makes the difference, they will have some plus weapons to emerge champion. I really hope that one of Vllaznia or Partizan wins the title, but of course I lean more towards Vllaznia.
