Inter were not entirely happy with the refereeing of the match against Liverpool. Not only for the penalty awarded to Uirc for a minor foul by Bastoni, but also for the general management. In this specific case, the main referee was not the German referee, Felix Zweig, but the VAR Soren Storks, who was also decisive in the incident criticized by the English team in the first half: the handball by Ekitike that caused Konate's goal to be disallowed.
Inter officials, who had a calm exchange with the referee at San Siro, were not happy with his lack of character: Zwaer could have defended his performance on the pitch; according to witnesses, he was quite upset about the incident, which cost Inter their second consecutive Champions League defeat. It is difficult to accuse the refereeing team of lacking integrity, especially after there were two controversial incidents, one from each side.

Meanwhile, Marota and Ausilio were shocked to discover the criminal records of Zwajer, a 44-year-old real estate agent from Berlin, and Storks, a 37-year-old carpenter from Velen. Zwajer, as a young assistant coach, was suspended for six months by the German Football Association for match-fixing. The Federal Court revealed, in a file kept classified for almost ten years and then released to the German press, that Zwajer accepted 300 euros in cash from a later suspended referee, Robert Heuser, to “avoid injury” to Upertal in a Northern League match against Werder Bremen 2 (May 30, 2004). Zwajer later confessed to this, helping to investigate the allegations against the colleague at the center of the investigation and thus avoiding a life sentence in sports.

But Zweig has also been involved in other high-profile refereeing, including Roberto Rosetti, who oversaw the recent Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham. In 2016, Leverkusen coach Rudi Völler openly protested his refereeing of Borussia Dortmund, a match that was abandoned due to controversy surrounding an Aubameyang goal. In 2021, Zweig was heavily criticised for failing to award a penalty for Dortmund against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. When interviewed on the subject, Jude Bellingham, then a Borussia star, replied: “What do you expect when a referee convicted of betting is appointed to the most important match of the championship?”

As for VAR, Storks was in the control room during the Porto-Roma match last February, the first leg of the Europa League play-offs. The referee for that match, German Stieler, was severely reprimanded by Claudio Ranieri, who also complained to Rosetti, accusing him of appointing an unsuitable professional.
