Belgium's mixed triathlon relay team has withdrawn from Monday's race. This decision came after one of the swimmers was infected in the Seine River.

More precisely, the Belgian delegation suspects Esheria Koli. Acquired bacteria endanger the health of athletes, something that is unacceptable at the Olympic Games, Paris 2024.

Claire Michel competed in the women's triathlon on Wednesday, finishing 38th. The popular Belgian team clarified that Michel was taken to a clinic in the Olympic Village in Paris on Sunday for medical treatment, only to rejoin the group a few hours later.

The team did not say whether Michel became ill because of pollution in the Seine, the site of the triathlon's 1,500m swim race. But on race day, the men's program was postponed after water quality testing showed the Seine was unsafe for swimming.

Rumors in Belgian media are rife, but a spokesman for Belgium's Olympic team declined to answer questions about Michel's condition on Sunday.

Concerns over the quality of the Seine's water have clouded the Olympics. By the time the event began, more than $1.5 billion had been spent to ensure normal racing on a clean river. Germany has triumphed in the triathlon, showing its strength once again.
