American swimming star Katie Ledecky won her ninth gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle during the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
Ledecky won her fourth consecutive Olympic 800-meter freestyle title to tie the record for most gold medals won by a female athlete in any sport. She equals the 50-year-old record of Soviet Union gymnast Larisa Latynina.
With the new achievement, Ledecky became the second athlete to win nine gold medals in the history of the Olympic Games. She has dominated the 800 meters since winning the race as a 15-year-old at the 2012 London Games.
The 27-year-old clocked 8 minutes 11.04 seconds, ahead of Ariarne Titmus (8:12.29) and Paige Madden of the United States (8:13.00).
No other female swimmer has won gold in four different Olympics, and Ledecky said that was the record that gave her special satisfaction.
