A photo taken at a Miami sporting goods store has gone viral in recent hours. It shows a fan standing next to a person who resembles former Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuaín. However, his appearance has raised questions about the real identity of the person in the photo.
The suspicions stem from the obvious physical change compared to Higuain's recent public appearances. The person in the photo appears a few kilos heavier, with a thick, unkempt beard, sparse hair and very informal clothing (shorts and sandals). These elements have led some in the public to question the authenticity of the image and even suggest the possibility of manipulation with Artificial Intelligence.
Gonzalo Higuaín ended his career in 2022, having played for clubs such as River Plate, Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus, Chelsea and Milan, ending his professional career with Inter Miami in Florida. Physical changes after retirement from sports are not uncommon for former footballers, but in this case, the perceived transformation has been more pronounced and has surprised fans.
In an interview with "La Nación" in April 2021, Higuain spoke about the change in appearance and the relationship with public criticism:
" Neither the media nor the fans judge you if you are fat, thin, hairless... I let my beard grow and I became news, but no one talks about me in football. At first the criticism hurt me, now it doesn't. And since my daughter was born, I have changed my sensitivity ."
Over the years, he has built an enviable record, winning, among others, three Spanish league titles, three Italian titles, three Coppa Italia titles, a Spanish Cup, three Super Cups and a Europa League with Chelsea. With the Argentina national team, despite not lifting any trophies, he reached three prestigious finals, becoming runner-up in the 2014 World Cup and runner-up in the 2015 and 2016 Copa America.
