A revolution is expected in the Champions League, UEFA is ready to eliminate

UEFA continues with its drastic changes to club tournaments, which after changing the format, are also modifying the traditional rules of the matches. And the central tournament that UEFA is trying to change is undoubtedly the Champions League, in order to make it more spectacular and provide as much revenue as possible.

The change currently being considered in Nyon, and discussed with FIFPro and various members of the organisation that governs football on the continent, is the removal of extra time from the Champions League in knockout matches. According to The Guardian, the latest discussions are informal, as there is no concrete plan. But UEFA has received a positive response to the initiative, which it has argued is necessary to reduce the playing time of players in a period when the calendar is overcrowded.

The idea is that in the knockout phase of the Champions League, if the score is equal after 180 minutes, then extra time will not be played, as 30 minutes will be eliminated to immediately make way for penalties. A change from tradition, but one that UEFA sees as necessary to increase the tournament's viewership and not to fade interest during those 30 minutes where nothing often happens. Such an innovation has been tried in several tournaments such as the European Super Cup or the Spanish Super Cup, or in other national tournaments on the continent that are direct elimination.
