Why Chelsea are not punished for their outrageous spending and who is Tod Bohli

The fact that the market has undergone an epochal turn in recent years is no longer something new. Purchases over 100 million euros are already a practice. Indeed, for some teams we are surprised if the demand and supply will not exceed 80 million.

Among them is of course Tod Bohl's Chelsea, who have spent insane amounts of money since May 2022. Who owns the Blues and why is the club not sanctioned?

Born in the United States of America, in Virginia, in 1973, Tod Bohli comes from a family of German origin. He graduated in 1991 and enrolled at the College of William & Mary, the university where Thomas Jefferson studied finance.

He immediately gained a lot of experience in companies such as Citybank and Credit Suisse First Boston and in 2010 was the protagonist of a special episode. He hates smoking, and when he's in a hotel room in Kansas, he sniffs it, takes the covers off, and goes to sleep on a park bench.

At 5 o'clock the next morning he was in front of the offices of Security Benefit, an insurance company, for which he was negotiating an important deal (which he completed) on behalf of the company Guggenheim Partners, for which he works.

Ambition and the first signs of the character of a great entrepreneur began to be seen from 2010 onwards. In 2015, he left the company of which he had become president, took some executives with him, bought some assets of Guggenheim Partners (including Security Benefit) and founded Eldridge Industries.

As of 2022, Bohli had assets of 4.5 billion euros and had already invested in many companies, including DraftKings, EpicGames (which developed the game Fortnite), and is also the owner of magazines such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, Variety and Hollywood Reporters.

Not only that, apart from owning several hotels, he bought the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball in 2012, along with Magic Johnson. He also owns 27% of the Los Angeles Lakers and owns a percentage of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.

Since May 2022, he has owned Chelsea, which he had already tried to buy in 2019, without success. In the end, the purchase of blues with the help of entrepreneurs and other investors cost about 5 billion euros.

Why is Chelsea not penalized?

From May 2022 to June 2023, Chelsea spent 676 million euros. To these should be added the acquisitions between July and August of Moises Kaisedo (133 million euros), Disasi (45 million euros), Lavia (62 million plus bonuses), Ugoçukvu (27 million euros), Angelo (15 million euros) and Robert Sanchez (23 million euros).

Therefore, the figure of one billion euros is almost reached in just over a year: but how does Chelsea manage to afford such figures without receiving sanctions from UEFA?

The sale of these players has been included in the 2023 budget. So, does Chelsea risk anything? No, on the contrary, they will have to be good every year in terms of sales, from qualifying for the European Cups, etc. This is because FFP (Financial Fair Play) does not allow spending more than is earned.

Furthermore, from next season, UEFA will introduce a rule for amortization, which can be done for a maximum of 5 years, but will not be retroactive. The Blues are "safe", but will no longer be able to amortize contracts for more than five years.
