Throwbacks are always nice. Especially when it comes to people who know Albania, the mentality and sports in the country.
President of the Albanian Basketball Federation, Avni Ponari, today presented the new coach of the National Men's National Team, the Greek Antonios Doukas, at the premises of the "Goga Basket" Academy.
During his speech, Mr. Ponari said, among other things, that the Greek technician is a well-known name in the sport of basketball, with international experience in training and a good knowledge of basketball in Albania, having previously coached not only the National Team but also Tirana team.
" His relationship with the players, the familiarity he had with them, but also his desire because Doukas was also the coach of Tirana for a year. So there is a greater recognition than other coaches even though we had some alternatives. We thought Doukas is closer to the Albanian mentality and knowing the teams ", said Ponari, among other things.
Meanwhile, for the Greek Doukas, leading the Albanian National Basketball Team is an honor.
" When a president calls you to lead the national team, you cannot say no. I did not choose Albania, but the federation chose me and I am very proud of that. I will try to make the best selection of players that are available to build a national team as competitive as possible and to get the best possible results" , said the Hellenic technician.
The new coach must start work immediately after Albania faces Romania on July 19; on July 26 he visits Slovakia; 3 days later Romania and waits on August 5 Slovakia. These matches are valid for the pre-qualifiers of Eurobasket 2025
Meanwhile, this summer's international activities continue with the other national teams U20/18/16 for boys and U18/16 for girls.
