As expected, FIFA did not exclude Israel from international competitions. The council of world football's highest body, which met this Thursday in Zurich, did not take any decision on the complaint of the Palestine Football Federation (recognized by FIFA since 1998), regarding the latter's complaint about the war in Gaza.
In his speech, FIFA head Gianni Infantino said that they cannot solve geopolitical problems.
" FIFA cannot solve geopolitical problems, but it can and must promote football worldwide by exploiting its unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values ," Infantino said.
In his opening remarks, the Italian praised the federations' ongoing dialogue on this issue and stressed the importance of peace.
" At FIFA, we are committed to using the power of football to unite people in a divided world. Our thoughts are with those suffering in the conflicts that exist in the world today. The message that football can convey today is one of unity and peace ," said Infantino.
Even UEFA takes a step back
UEFA also decided to temporarily suspend plans to exclude Israel from European football competitions, following the presentation of the peace plan by US President Donald Trump.
The highest football institution in Europe had scheduled an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee next week, where the majority of members were seen as inclined to support the exclusion of the Israeli national team.
However, diplomatic initiatives launched by the White House to end the conflict in Gaza have caused UEFA to take a step back, postponing the decision to another moment.
