Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis passed away on Tuesday, four days after suffering a serious fall during the final of the men's middle distance race at the World Games taking place in Chengdu, China.
The accident occurred on Friday during the race, where the 29-year-old suffered fatal injuries and was found unconscious by organizers.
Despite the immediate medical care he received at one of the most renowned medical institutions in China, Debertolis failed to survive and passed away four days after the incident, while the cause of his death has not currently been officially confirmed.
Tom Hollowell, president of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), expressed his deepest condolences for the loss of the Italian athlete, also praising his contribution to the sport.
Mattia Debertolis lived in Sweden, where he was pursuing his PhD at a university in Stockholm and graduated as a civil engineer. He was part of the Italian national team and had managed to finish fifth in the 2022 World Cup final.
World Games organizers have announced that they will continue to support Debertoli's family and the orienteering community in every way possible during this difficult time.
