Following the decision of the Special Court and the SPAK's announcement of a new indictment against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, the reaction of his legal representatives has also come. SPAK accuses Veliaj of concealing assets and has seized two properties in Kodra e Diellit.
In a public statement, the lawyers clarify that neither Veliaj nor his wife, Ajola Xoxa, are the owners of the seized property and have no legal or financial connection with the company "AK" shpk, to which the property in question belongs.
"The real estate owned by Ms. Xoxa is the apartment where they reside, in the Selita area, purchased before the marriage and which has not been the subject of any investigation or seizure by the authorities," the reaction states.
The lawyers emphasize that Veliaj and his wife have declared all their assets according to the law and have been cooperative with the relevant institutions. They demand that any investigation be based on concrete evidence and that the principle of presumption of innocence be respected.
In the end, they ask for the understanding of the residents of the building where the seized property is located, explaining that the Veliaj-Xoxa couple has no connection to that property and that their concern comes only from the physical proximity of the apartments.
Lawyers' reaction:
Following media reports and increased public interest regarding the decision of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, in the framework of criminal proceedings no. 27 of 2024, we clarify as follows:
Neither Erion Veliaj nor Ms. Ajola Xoxa are the owners of this seized property and have no property or legal connection with the commercial entity "AK" shpk, nor with the property that is the subject of the "preventive seizure" property insurance measure.
The real estate owned by Mr. Xoxa is the apartment where they reside, in the Selita area, created before the marriage, and this apartment is not and has not at any time been the subject of investigation or seizure by any law enforcement authority.
We emphasize that it is within the legal right of the prosecution to conduct investigations, but the suspicions raised must be based on concrete facts and verifiable evidence, in respect of the principle of the presumption of innocence and the fundamental rights of the individual.
Mr. Veliaj and Mrs. Xoxa have declared their assets, both before and after marriage, in accordance with the legislation in force, and have always been cooperative with the responsible institutions.
Any attempt to distort reality and to link their name to issues that have no legal basis constitutes misinformation of the public opinion and an attack on the public figure of Mr. Veliaj, for which all legal avenues will be pursued to protect his reputation and uncover the truth to the end.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused to the neighbors of the Veliaj Xoxa couple, and their only "fault" is that they live in the same building as the latter.
