Sources close to the investigation indicate that the matter is being treated seriously due to the impact that such news can have in creating panic and destabilizing the social climate.

The Anti-Terrorist Structure from Tirana is reported to have arrived in Gjirokastra a few days ago, as part of verifications regarding the spread of suspected fake news on social networks, which has caused debate and numerous reactions in local public opinion.

The investigations are related to publications made on social networks by citizen Emin Kokalari, which claimed that there were cases of an infectious disease in the Municipality of Gjirokastra and that Mayor Flamur Golemi was also affected.

According to "Pamphlet" sources , these claims have not been confirmed by health authorities and are being handled as part of investigations to verify their content and consequences. It is reported that several people have been questioned so far, in order to identify the origin of the information and the manner in which it was disseminated to the public.

Sources close to the investigation indicate that the matter is being treated seriously due to the impact that such news can have in creating panic and destabilizing the social climate. Meanwhile, the focus of the investigation also remains the possibility of whether the dissemination of the information was coordinated or whether there were other elements involved in its amplification on social networks.

The authorities have not yet issued a final official statement on the progress of the proceedings.

We recall that about a month ago, the mayor of Gjirokastra, Flamur Golemi, through his lawyer Arben Llangozi, filed a criminal complaint with the competent authorities, requesting an investigation for spreading panic and publishing false information that, according to him, damages the figure and institution he leads.

Investigations continue.

We recall that about 1 month ago, the police initiated criminal proceedings against Emin Kokalari, identified as an activist.

"Crime Investigation Specialists at the Gjirokastra Police Station referred the materials to the Prosecutor's Office, where criminal proceedings were initiated against citizen EK, 33 years old, resident of Gjirokastra, for the criminal offense of "Spreading false information that incites panic".
The 33-year-old's cell phone was seized as material evidence. The procedural materials were transferred to the Prosecutor's Office at the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Gjirokastra, for further action," the police announced on April 20.

The activist himself has denied on social media that he has accused anyone by name. The Police's reaction came after the Municipality of Gjirokastra had previously denied the allegations raised on social media.
