The Ombudsman has requested the closure of Burreli Prison, Kosovo in Lushnja, Kukës, "Mine Peza" and building A of the "Jordan Misja" 313 Penitentiary Institution, highlighting serious problems in these penitentiary institutions.
According to the report, these prisons were found to have dilapidated facilities, lack of space, humidity, insufficient ventilation and lighting, as well as inadequate hygiene and sanitary conditions.
Lawyer Edmond Petraj reacted to this report. He described the situation as a serious alarm that requires an immediate response from the state.
"This is a report that alarms the state, which must act," Petraj declared to "Report TV".
According to him, the biggest problems in the aforementioned prisons are related to overcrowding and hygienic-sanitary conditions, which according to the lawyer violate minimum standards.
Focusing on the "Jordan Misja" Penitentiary Institution, Petraj said that the situation has improved after the reconstructions carried out.
"If we talk about Jordan Misja, it is a high-security prison, but there are changes there. It has been much worse, but reconstruction has been done," he said.
As for the "Mine Peza" prison, the lawyer warned about the danger that overcrowding could bring.
"Mine Peza is a prison that needs to be repaired, as we have overcrowding, we have characters who are in that institution and at some point we may have unpleasant events," said Petraj.
He added that the prisons of Kukës and Kosovo in Lushnje also need intervention and reconstruction.
"The Kukës prison needs to be repaired again, as it is an old prison. The Kosovo prison in Lushnje also needs to be repaired," the lawyer declared.
