Albania has paid a heavy price for its silence. For decades, dictatorship turned free speech into danger and legal protection into a formality. The media was used as propaganda, the legal profession was kept under control, while justice became an instrument of fear. In that reality, journalists and lawyers were not independent professionals, they were voices that had to be obeyed or silenced.
Today we live in a democracy, but the forms of pressure have not disappeared, they have been refined: threats, intimidation, economic blackmail, disguised censorship, selective prosecution, public smearing and institutional obstacles. When a journalist is attacked, the truth is attacked. When a lawyer is obstructed, the law is violated. When these two pillars are weakened, democracy itself is weakened.
Albania knows well what dictatorship means, when free speech was called guilt, when the truth was censored, when the lawyer was feared and disappeared as a profession, when justice was an order not a law. We accept neither the return nor the shadow of that time.
Today, pressure comes in every form of phone calls, economic blackmail, selective trials, public smears, imposed silence, “messages,” and normalized fear. And when the journalist is forced to remain silent, the citizen remains blind. When the lawyer is thwarted, the citizen remains defenseless.
For this reason, we have gathered in a common force and created "Media and Justice", we have not gathered as decor, but as a force for action. A common front of media and advocacy to prevent fear from becoming normal and abuse from becoming the rule.
We will protect each other from clans in justice and censorship for every journalist, lawyer, independent jurist threatened because of their work. We will have a common voice for public and institutional denunciation of every act of pressure, censorship and abuse of power. We will create a network of professional solidarity, no one alone in the face of blackmail and intimidation. Together we will promote international standards for freedom of expression, due process and impartial justice. Together we will seek guarantees of safety, dignity, integrity and professional independence.
We do not have the luxury of forgetting dictatorship because forgetting brings repetition. And we do not have the right to remain silent because silence weakens the rule of law.
Be part of the "Media and Justice" Association. Today we protect journalists and lawyers. Tomorrow we protect the freedom of every citizen.
