" A base with symbolic, important geopolitical or even historical value ", is how the former Minister of the Interior, Sandër Lleshaj called the inauguration of the military base in Kuçova today.
Invited to the show "Ditari" on "A2CNN", the former minister also explained why, in his opinion, Albania was chosen for the establishment of such a NATO base.
" Of the six countries of what we call the Western Balkans, even if you tried to do it differently, you could not find a more suitable country. From us geographical, political. Albania is a stable country. We have contributed to NATO for years. Other countries are still unstable countries, in the sense of the parameters that NATO requires, to build a base ", he said.
According to the former minister, Albania was an inevitable solution even for the consistency it has shown in terms of willingness to show that it is a stable partner of the North Atlantic Alliance.
But will there be economic benefits to the area where the base is located? Lleshaj says that the impact will be positive for the residents of the area. And, the former minister believes that there will be continuity with future projects.
" The arrival is a good sign. A seed that I believe will have a sequel. It is important to become a NATO address, where planes will land, people will come. It is important to be on the map. I am optimistic that this will continue not only in the air aspect, but also in the maritime aspect ", he said.
The Kuçova base has been interpreted by many as a clear message sent towards Russia, which has Serbia as its satellite in the Balkans, at a time when the situation on the border with Kosovo has been tense.
" Since 2014, something very big is happening. It marked the moment when a large state militarily attacked another state. NATO cannot remain indifferent. There are other countries, besides Ukraine, that feel threatened" , concluded Sandër Lleshaj.
