Another major change is coming into effect for Albanian travelers to Europe. The European Union Delegation in Tirana has announced that the Entry/Exit System (EES) will come into effect from October 12, 2025, which will include detailed registration of every non-EU citizen entering or leaving the Schengen area.
According to the announcement, this system will automatically record travel document data, arrival and departure dates, as well as biometric data of passengers, including fingerprints and facial image. “No action is required before travel and there is no additional fee,” – says the official EU communication.
Initially, the EES will be implemented gradually in the 29 countries of the Schengen area, entering into full force on 10 April 2026. Until then, passports will be stamped as usual, while the collection of biometric data will be carried out in phases, depending on the border crossing points.
The system will automatically identify any case of exceeding the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period. If the authorities of a European country refuse entry, the relevant information will also be recorded in the system.
The EU emphasizes that this mechanism will increase security and transparency, enabling authorities to identify violations of residence rules. For Albanians who travel frequently to European countries, this means more detailed checks, but also more convenience in crossing the border, as data will be stored electronically.
Practical implementation begins on October 12, 2025, while after April 10, 2026, the EES system will be fully functional at all external border points of the European Union.
