Belgium demands half of the money that SPAK has seized from criminal

The Belgian government is demanding its share of the money that SPAK has seized from Albanian criminal groups for investigations launched in Belgium. Two Belgian ministers, the justice minister and the immigration minister, will discuss during their special visit to Albania and Kosovo, also the division of the money seized from drug trafficking.

"The mission will also include discussions on a letter of intent regarding asset sharing, allowing part of the criminal proceeds seized in Albania or Kosovo as a result of Belgian-led investigations to be returned to the Belgian treasury," the Belgian news agency, belganewsagency, reported.

A large part of the seizures that SPAK has made against criminal groups have come precisely because of the investigations launched by Belgium. Among them, the most notable have been the seizures of the assets of two brothers from Fushë Kruja, the seizure of the assets of Eridian Guerrero in Vlora, etc.

It concerns millions of euros seized in the form of bank accounts, but also real estate, which have resulted from criminal activities. Now, the Belgian government is demanding its share of this money.

Transfer of prisoners

The two Belgian ministers began a three-day diplomatic mission to Albania and Kosovo on Monday. The visit focuses on addressing prison overcrowding and the fight against organized crime.

To ease chronic overcrowding in Belgian prisons, the government is considering renting or building a prison abroad for non-resident offenders. Ministers will hold exploratory talks on the idea of doing this in Albania or Kosovo during their visit to these countries.

Verlinden and Van Bossuyt will also pressure Albania to take back its citizens currently detained in Belgium. There are 307 Albanians in Belgian prisons, 253 of whom have no right to remain in the country.

"If those who are sentenced here and do not have the right to reside in Belgium can serve their sentence in their country of origin, this means that the sentence is properly enforced, while also relieving the pressure on our prison system," Verlinden said./Capital
