The 2023 census has documented in which counties and municipalities the largest population is concentrated. Approximately, one third of the Albanian population (31.6 percent) lives in the district of Tirana, namely 758,513 inhabitants.
The most active age group is also concentrated here. 403 022 inhabitants are aged 15-64. Meanwhile, out of the 598,176 total residents in this municipality, a large presence of women can be noticed. There are 287,992 men, of which 191,499 are in the labor force (aged 15-64). While for women, the figure is 310,184, and of these, 211,523 are aged 15-64.
Counties from which they are fleeing the most
In all districts, with the exception of Tirana, the population has been decreasing during the period 2011-2023, in a range of changes of 28.3 percent in the district of Shkodra and 27.3 percent in the district of Kukës, up to 0.7 percent. in the district of Berat. Expressed in absolute value, Elbasan and Shkodra have suffered the highest population decline.
On the other hand, the population of Tirana district has increased by 1.2 percent, mostly from internal migration. The increase in the population in Tirana and the decrease in other counties results in the increase in the percentage of the resident population in Tirana, from 26.8 percent in 2011 to 31.6 percent in 2023
According to the 2023 Census, 98.3 percent of the population in Albania are natives, and 1.7 percent are individuals born abroad. Among the foreign-born population, approximately half of them (46.2 percent) were born in Greece, and 16.6 percent in Italy.
Analyzing the composition of the local and foreign-born population according to the district, it is noted that the Gjirokastra district has the highest percentage of the foreign-born population, with 2.8 percent. In the other three counties of Vlora, Tirana and Durrës, there is a percentage of the population born abroad above the average
