Nearly half a million Albanians have left Albania over the past twelve years, a staggering number that is expected to open a wider debate on the causes and consequences, including the quality of governance and the type of political system that drives so many people to leave their country. to start life over in another country.
The data published by the Institute of Statistics on Friday, show that the counters of the twelfth Census in the history of the Albanian state, the resident population was 2,402,113 inhabitants. Twelve years ago, in the 2011 census, the actual population was 2.8 million inhabitants, while the natural increase for the period 2012-2023, i.e. the difference between citizens born and those who died, is 88 thousand people. This means that if Albania had no emigration, the population would increase by 88,000 instead of shrinking by 400,000.
The number of Albanians who have experienced emigration is likely to be higher than this because the resident population of 2023 also includes Albanians who emigrated in previous decades and returned to the country in the last decade.
The main data of the census suggests that every year during the last 12 years at least 40 thousand people or almost 1.5% of the resident population have left Albania. This is a figure comparable to a war situation.
The resident population of Albania peaked in 1989 with 3.2 million inhabitants. During the period 1989-2001, the resident population fell to 3.1 million, but the missing population increase during this period of 550,000 people suggests that in fact, the emigration of the first decade after communism was approximately 650,00 people.
Between the period 2001-2011, the resident population fell from 3.1 to 2.8 million, while the missing natural addition was approximately 190 thousand people, suggesting a net emigration of about 490 thousand people.
The 2023 census data suggest that immigration has continued throughout the last decade at the same dizzying pace as the previous decade, despite many facts that suggested a slowdown.
Among other important data:
The average age of the resident population is currently 42.5 years, or 7 years older than a decade ago./ BIRN
