Diabetes, the silent disease, doctors: Around 6 thousand new cases are

Living with diabetes is not easy, say specialists. In just one year, an average of about 6,000 new cases are detected in the country, a figure that has increased significantly in the number of people affected over the past 10 years. Doctors link this increase to malnutrition, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

"About 111 thousand people suffer from diabetes in our country, and about 6 thousand are discovered every year. The increase in diabetes figures is related to lifestyle factors. The increase in the number of cases is precisely related to obesity. We are seeing an increase in the number of obese people every year, which translates into more diabetics over time," added Megi Lekbello, Endocrinologist at QSUT for 'Abcnews'.

The disease spares no one. But, what groups are most at risk, besides those with a family history of this disease?

"The risk categories include all those who have family members with this disease, but even healthy people are at risk. The age factor also affects, as time goes by you are more prone to developing diabetes. But what we see in recent years is an unhealthy lifestyle, which is showing cases at younger ages," said Lekbello.

In any case, the doctors' appeal remains the same: more awareness and regular check-ups. According to health specialists, performing a check-up can detect the disease early and avoid serious complications.

"With the check-up program that we have, which is done every year, it is a way to catch the disease in time. To be part of the examination, just show up at the polyclinics or Health Centers, it is offered free of charge. Diagnosis is done by measuring blood glycemia," said Megi Lekbello.

Currently, around 111,000 people in the country are diagnosed with diabetes, while doctors warn that the real number may be even higher, due to undiagnosed cases.
