The case of Ervis Berberi and other defendants suspected of abuses with ARA tenders is going to trial. The former head of this institution, Berberi, is accused of corruption and money laundering.
Earlier in June this year, the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) announced that it had brought to trial the former head of the Albanian Road Authority, Ervis Berberi, and 21 other people, suspected of being involved in corruption, money laundering, document forgery, and violation of equality in tenders.
SPAK has investigated over 8 tender procedures and in 6 of them it resulted that Berberi was corrupted by 3 businessmen, Valter Begaj, Brunilda Buli and Ervis Lami, co-defendants with him, to the value of over 77 million lek.
Meanwhile, investigations into the 8 tenders have also revealed the involvement of other officials in violating the equality of companies in procurement procedures, favoring in 7 cases the company "Net Group" SHPK and in another case "EuroElektra" Shpk.
For this reason, 18 officials have been indicted on charges of "Violation of equality in tenders." 3 of them also for falsifying documents in order to favor companies.
