On the one hand, Albanians who wander the streets of Europe in search of shelter and work, and on the other, irregular immigrants who try to use their homeland as a passage to the west.

It is this black and white photo that finds Albania and the world on International Refugee Day. Nearly 500 migrants from the Middle East and North Africa were apprehended in the country in the first four months of the year.

Although decreasing, the flows show that Albania continues to be considered a "troubled country."

"They have transited Albania. They do not seek asylum. they want to escape to the West. there they have the intended destination. And mainly on the Kapshtica-Kakavije border. This is a different trend from previous years. Before, they were usually caught even within the territory of Albania," says Armela Xhaho, researcher of immigration issues.

More than desire, the need for a better life continues to push Albanians to flee. Although slightly down compared to previous years, more than desire, the need for a better life pushed 2,500 Albanians to apply for asylum in one of the European Union countries until March.

"It's very incoherent and very disturbing. Nowadays, there is usually a lot of talk outside the media, not only Albanian, but also foreign ones, that every day more and more young people are moving from our country, from Albania. It is a deep wound," says Ermela, a student.

Pending the publication of Cens findings, data from the Institute of Statistics show that in the last eight years alone, the number of young people up to 24 years has decreased by 206 thousand. From over 1 million in 2015, there are now less than 812 thousand young men and women in the country.

"It is a form of surrender. We are feeling the effects. It is not perception. We are facing a demographic crisis. We will probably suffer a social crisis. This is because policies are missing."

The mass and continuous departure of young people has caused the average age in the country to increase, increasing by 3.8 years only in the span of 2015-2023.

Meanwhile, data from Eurostat show that Albanians rank seventh in the world for the highest number of immigrants staying irregularly in one of the "union" countries./ A2CNN
