Venezuelan journalist Felipe Torres Gianvittorio, who is currently in Spain, gave an exclusive interview this evening on the show Top Story.
He spoke about the US action and the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Asked about the situation in Venezuela, regarding corruption and drug trafficking, he said: " These are accusations from the US to justify their actions. The Venezuelan regime has participated in drug trafficking as part of the cartel known as the Soles cartel, in which they facilitated the circulation of drugs. The US has been alleging this in recent years, especially during the Trump presidency. These activities are taking place in Venezuela and we did not have a state of law to investigate them ."
The journalist indicated that they needed to overthrow Maduro but were clear that they could not do this without the US.
" Yes, it's true, I was born in Caracas. I left there after the October elections that Maduro won, or thought he won, a year and a half ago in 2024."
The main reason I left was because I was offered a scholarship for a Master's degree in the Czech Republic, in journalism. I was looking forward to working as a journalist in Venezuela, but in my case it was impossible because I was investigating things that had to do with politics, which was impossible to allow.
We Venezuelans are aware of the US decisions, it is a violation of sovereignty, but for us our rights have been violated like many other international countries. Since we know that the US comes to use our resources, the people of Venezuela want to remove Maduro from power.
For us, the ideal outcome would be for our own army to remove Maduro, but the problem is that both sides cooperate with each other. The government wants the army to stay in power and vice versa. Even if we had tried on our own, the chances of reaching these conclusions without the US are slim. For Venezuela, I expect there to be a transition, free elections, for both sides to decide who will lead the country. As a Venezuelan, I understand the US point of view. It is a bitter pill, but we have to swallow it ,” said journalist Felipe Torres Gianvittorio.
