Security expert Ilir Kulla warns of a major change in the United States' approach to Albania and the region. In an interview for the podcast "Të Pashoq", he said that the recent statements of American officials and the meetings of the US envoy with Albanian justice leaders are not coincidental, but indicative of a new phase of American pressure on the phenomenon of organized crime and drug cartels.
-The US envoy met a few days ago with the leaders of SPAK and BKH, and just two days ago met with the president of the Constitutional Court. And in all these meetings, she quotes US President Donald Trump's statement on the uncompromising fight against drug cartels. What does this mean for Albania?
It means what I told you, that the institutions of the Albanian state must wake up and must understand that...
-So has the matter entered concrete channels?
Yes, exactly, which means that times have changed and answers are needed, so new challenges require new times, require new solutions. The same philosophy and the same language no longer work.
-It's closer than you think, you say?
Yes, of course, of course. It means that in politics with today's America, you can't talk about how interesting we were in history for communist China 40-50 years ago. Not with these people. They don't accept that language. With these people, the problem is identified and the solution is made. Taking time, pretending not to understand the problem, half-defense, only complicates things. Because people who have a different way of thinking have come to power in Washington. When they don't hesitate and say that we are going to invade the territory of a NATO country, of a strategically friendly and allied country such as the territory of Denmark in Greenland, imagine what they can think about us, who are a much smaller country. So I think that it is a moment for, it is a point and a moment for reflection.
