The judge of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, Astrit Kalaja, was executed the day before in the courtroom, just after he finished pronouncing a decision regarding a property conflict.
The event has shocked public opinion, while the Court of Appeal has suspended all activities for 3 days. The District Courts have also suspended work today.
The murder of a judge in the courtroom is not only the first case in Albania, but such events have not occurred in any country in Europe, or even beyond.
But how was this serious event experienced by the legal profession?
Brunilda Lika expressed shock over the event.
She told the media that yesterday's incident is a wake-up call for security in the justice system. She claimed that she was inside the courthouse when the incident occurred.
"I was present at the Court of Appeal. For a judge to lose his life while giving a decision for the Republic of Albania is an unprecedented act."
I saw the panic that occurred in the courtroom. They gathered in a space where we lawyers gather.
"I didn't see anything because the situation was shocking. When this happened, we panicked. It's an unprecedented act, the murder of a judge inside the courtroom. I didn't see anything because I wasn't present in the courtroom," said the lawyer.
