A bouquet of flowers placed on the table where a day earlier the judge of the Tirana Court of Appeal, Astrit Kalaja, announced the final decision on behalf of the Republic.

After the verdict was announced, the judge was shot by a representative of one of the parties in the trial, Elvis Shkambi. The judge died moments later, while Shkambi waited in the courtyard of the building to be arrested by the police.

A video published by News24 shows the premises of the Court of Appeal, 24 hours after the serious incident. Judge Kalaja, the perpetrator of the murder, was shot several times, while 3 bullets in the chest took his life.

A bouquet of white flowers has been placed on the table where Kalaja was sitting, as a sign of respect and homage to Kalaja, who was killed in the line of duty.

Kalaja is the first judge to be killed in a courtroom in Albania and the second among magistrates to lose his life, after the execution of Skerdilajd Konomi, about two decades ago.

In connection with the crime of the murder of Judge Kalaja, three people have been arrested: the perpetrator Elvis Shkambi, his uncle, Gjon Shkambi, and the court security guard, Banush Koxhaj.

The perpetrator also fired a gun at the opposing party in the trial, father and son, Rakip and Ervis Kurtaj, injuring them.
