The New Democracy party of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced Fredi Beleri, who is in prison for vote-buying, as a candidate for MEP. The placement of Beler as a candidate for the MEP by the Greek Prime Minister has introduced conflicts within the party.
The Foreign Minister of Greece, Georgios Gerapetritis and the foreign policy advisor to the Greek Prime Minister, Aleksandra Papadhopoulou, have expressed their opposition to Fredi Beleri's candidacy. According to them, placing him on the list of candidates for MEPs would turn this issue into a European issue from a bilateral issue with Albania, as the issue, according to them, should be in higher European instances.
Gerapetritis has stated earlier that the case of Fredi Beleri, who was sentenced to two years in prison for vote buying, should be seen as a European concern and not a bilateral issue between the two Balkan neighbors.
"This is not a bilateral issue. If a candidate country aspiring to join the European Union supports the principles of the rule of law and respects the political rights of its citizens, it is not bilateral. It is a European issue and we must perceive it as such and highlight it in all forums" , he declared in March.
