The news about the creation of a sovereign Bektashi state devised by Edi Rama has evoked many reactions from politics, public opinion and the media.
Today, the EU office in Tirana reacted to this issue. The reaction states that the EU supports tolerance and interreligious dialogue, but there is no concrete comment at this stage.
It is also emphasized in the reaction that the EU does not have the competence to regulate religion.
"We have no comments at this stage. Freedom of thought, conscience and religion is enshrined in Article 10 of the EU Charter, for fundamental rights. In general, the EU supports tolerance and interreligious dialogue. The EU has not competence to regulate religious matters" , the brief response states.
The idea of creating a 'Vatican' for the Bektashi in the heart of Tirana was made public a few days ago by an interview of Prime Minister Edi Rama together with Baba Mondi for the New York Times. If approved by parliament, this mini-state will have an area of at least 11 hectares, its own borders, its own passport and its own secret service.
For his part, Baba Mondi told the American media that the Bektashi state may need a small intelligence service, but it will not have an army, border guards or courts.
