Criminalistics expert Ervin Karamuço has commented on the situation in Mexico following reports of the killing of El Mencho, describing him as one of the most powerful figures in fentanyl trafficking in the world.

According to Karamuço, the murdered person was considered the "fentanyl king", wanted for 16-17 years by the United States of America.

" The one who was killed was the king of fentanyl in the world. The king of fentanyl. He had been wanted for almost 16-17 years by the United States of America. It had become a very big challenge. In the separation he made from Sinaloa, this was the king of fentanyl, not of shipments from Colombia. Today, the most profitable thing in Mexico is no longer the traditional drug channels that came from cocaine-producing countries. But the fentanyl that comes from China, especially from the Pacific side, and that with very small quantities generates big profits ," he said in "Euronews Albania".

Speaking about the reality on the ground, Karamuço also brought up his personal experience from a visit to Mexico, where, according to him, the security situation was tense due to clashes between the army and cartels.

" From Mexico City to Guadalajara, several cartel checkpoints had just opened on the highway. They would set up random cars, pull passengers off buses, pour gasoline and set vehicles on fire in the middle of the road to block traffic. This was happening during army campaigns to control and capture wanted persons ," he said.

The expert stressed that the cartels' reaction came as soon as state structures moved from their garrisons. He mentioned the presence of numerous security forces on the streets, including federal and local police and heavily armed Mexican marines.

" The situation was very dangerous. We saw pickup trucks with machine guns, Mexican marines and numerous police forces engaged ," said Karamuço.

However, he stressed that in tourist areas, the cartels follow a different logic of action. According to him, in cities like Puerto Vallarta, tourists are not affected.

" In some of the resorts, which are controlled by the cartels, tourists are not touched. The police even advised against entering the resorts, because no one came there. In Puerto Vallarta, they burned gas stations, cars and some houses of identified police officers, but the tourists were not touched ," he declared.

According to Karamuço, the latest developments are expected to affect the balance of power between the cartels, in a country where clashes over control of synthetic drug trafficking have long replaced traditional cocaine routes as the main source of profit.
