The British Minister of Immigration, Robert Jenrick, has stated that hundreds of immigrants have so far returned to Albania based on the agreement reached with the official Tirana.
In an interview with "Sky news", Jenrick initially said that "thousands" of illegal immigrants were returning to Albania, while later clarifying that currently only a few "hundreds" had been placed on the flights agreed in December last year.
He said it is still early days, but added that the process has had its problems, as many of the immigrants make last-minute claims. He also acknowledged that many migrants were currently in hotels or had fled.
Asked how many people who arrived in small boats returned to Albania?"
The British minister said that thousands of Albanians are returning to Albania, but not only those caught on boats, he added that this figure also included criminals, and not only those who arrived across the Channel.
" Well, there are hundreds of Albanians who have arrived who have been put on those flights. In April, over 1,000 Albanian nationals have returned since December - but that includes rejected asylum seekers, convicts and voluntary returns," he said .
Jenrick described the agreement as a "gold standard" agreement that is seeing "thousands of illegal Albanian immigrants return home and that the number of them coming through the channel has dropped significantly.
We recall that in December of last year, Rishi Sunak and Prime Minister Edi Rama agreed to "increase cooperation" in three areas - "security issues and internal affairs (with the main focus on the fight against organized crime and illegal immigration) ; investment growth; innovation, youth and education".
