On November 6, 2023, Prime Minister Edi Rama and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed in Rome the agreement for the construction in Albania of two centers for housing immigrants. According to the agreement, the landing port will be Shengjini, while Gjadri will be the camp where their accommodation will be built. The maximum host capacity is 3 thousand beds.
Meanwhile, the Italian side is a step ahead in this direction, since a few days ago the protocol was approved in the Assembly only with the votes of the majority.
According to the agreement signed on November 6, a reception office will be set up in Rome that will register asylum requests in the port of Shengjin, while in Gjadër the construction of the camp where the asylum seekers will be settled will begin.
The document stipulates that no more than 3,000 people will be accommodated in the camp at the same time, and asylum seekers have no right to leave it. All costs arising from this document are charged to the Italian government.
