In prison for abusing SASPAK funds, Ilir Beqaj seeks freedom; GJKKO postpones

During the hearing, Beqaj requested a security measure of "house arrest", or a property guarantee of 5 million new ALL.

The Special Court has postponed the decision regarding the request to change the coercive measure against the former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj, accused of embezzling EU funds from the SASPAK agency.

The former high-ranking socialist official is under arrest along with his three assistants, and in total there are 7 people who are being investigated by SPAK for abuse of office.

The next session has been postponed to August 7, at 13:00. During the hearing, Beqaj requested a security measure of "house arrest", or a property guarantee of 5 million new ALL.

Beqaj is in a cell due to suspicions of abuses of SASPAK funds. The session started with the presentation of Beqaj's arguments, regarding the request to change the measure. The defense of the former minister claims that there are no legal reasons to set the security measure "arrest in prison".

They claim that Beqaj has no reason to leave the country or destroy the evidence, but the Special Prosecutor's Office does not agree with this argument. Under these circumstances, it was also decided to postpone the decision after two days.

The former minister is also a defendant in the GJKKO for the 100 million euro Health concessions, a file for which SPAK has 8 people under accusation, among them the detained former deputy minister Klodian Rrjepaj and businessman Ilir Rrapaj.

But for this file, there was no coercive measure against Beqaj and he was pursued in a free state, until the scandal with the agency's funds was discovered.
