At the start of the tourist season, IKMT begins demolitions in the South;

Since yesterday evening, the National Inspectorate of Territorial Protection (IKMT) has launched an aggressive campaign to demolish illegal constructions on the south coast, at a time when the influx of tourists is expected.

In Jalë, four buildings collapsed on Sunday evening, while today the action has moved to Dhërmi, where five more buildings are being demolished. Residents and business owners have reacted with revolt, accusing IKMT and the Police of acting unilaterally, without warning and without legal transparency.

"They're taking the bread out of our children's mouths, you scoundrels," one of the affected business owners is heard saying. "We've been supplied with so much for this season. They didn't even notify us," adds another.

"They came to us without warning, at the height of the season they want to ruin us. This is the second time, I don't understand this situation," said a businessman.

"They came without a decision, while we are expecting tourists. We have made investments, we have hired people. They are forcing us to go bankrupt," testifies another.

The operation was accompanied by the presence of numerous police forces, while no final decision on the demolition of the buildings has yet been made public on the ground.

Meanwhile, IKMT has not yet issued an official statement on the criteria and legitimacy of this operation on the eve of the tourist season, raising strong suspicions of selectivity and ulterior motives behind the sudden demolitions.
