Drones, mortars and advanced artillery systems, including howitzers. These are some of the weapons that Albania will be supplied by an Israeli company based on an agreement, considered "secret" by the authorities in Albania.
The points of the agreement reveal the armament that Albania will have, while many of the countries of the Region, due to geopolitical developments, have increased their budgets in the field of defense. A few months ago, Albania signed agreements with Croatia and Kosovo in the field of defense, causing a reaction from Serbia, which on the other hand created an alliance with Hungary. A few months ago, Serbia organized a military parade, displaying its arsenal of weapons, as details of the agreements that Serbia has signed with NATO countries for the supply of weapons have been published from time to time.
Meanwhile, the official document states that the Israeli defense company will help Albania, a NATO member, create an independent defense industry.
This is the Israeli defense firm "Elbit Systems", which will supply Albania with weapons and help the country develop its domestic production, writes the Israeli media Haaretz .
The Haaretz article states that the current agreement is another step in strengthening defense relations between Israel and Albania, a process that aligns with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama's efforts to develop a domestic defense industry.
Under the agreement signed between the Israeli and Albanian governments in September, Elbit Systems will supply Albania with truck-mounted ATMOS 155mm howitzers and SPEAR 120mm mortar systems based on Elbit's CARDOM mortar.
The company will also supply two types of short-range tactical drones, the Magni-X and Thor.
The size of the deal is unknown, but previous ATMOS deals that Elbit Systems reported show each unit being sold for $5 million.
The Magni-X quadcopter drone can be carried on your back and Elbit Systems says it has fully autonomous capabilities, allowing it to fly in areas with severe GPS disruption.
The Magni-X can carry a payload of 1.5 kg, including day and night vision cameras and other sensors. It can operate for up to 60 minutes without interruption.
The Thor drone weighs up to 15 kg, including a reconnaissance payload or the TerminaTHOR system, designed to airdrop 5 small munitions. Its maximum flight time without a heavy payload is about 70 minutes.
Under the agreement, Elbit Systems will cooperate with the Albanian government company KAYO, which was established in 2024 to advance the development of the domestic defense industry.
The firm will build a 5,000-square-meter (about 53,800 square feet) manufacturing plant in northern Albania.
The agreement with Israel foresees that Elbit Systems will provide Albania with ten drones in the first phase, later helping the country set up production lines for drones and artillery systems.
The agreement submitted for approval by the Albanian Government does not mention the amount of the agreement nor does it specify the sources of financing.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has promised that Albania will be able to equip its army with domestically produced drones by 2027, and reports in the country say that Israeli technology is behind this promise.
It turns out that Elbit Systems is one of the main beneficiaries of the strengthening relationship, having signed an agreement in April to open a flight school in Vlora, a city on the Mediterranean coast, also in collaboration with KAYO.
Albania joined NATO more than 15 years ago and has increased its defense spending in recent years, partly under strong pressure from US President Donald Trump.
The country aims to invest 2 percent of its GDP in defense. At the signing ceremony for the establishment of the flight school, Albania’s Defense Minister, Pirro Vengu, said the country’s defense investment had increased more than tenfold in ten years, from 13 million euros to 138 million.
In 2022, Rama accused Tehran of a major cyberattack that brought down the country's services, and Tirana announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Tehran. At the same time, Albania signed a cooperation agreement with Israel's National Cyber Directorate, which helped it create cyber defenses.
Elbit Systems and the Defense Ministry declined to answer Haaretz's questions about the deal. The Albanian government did not comment on the deal. /Pamphlet/
